NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED IN CONNECTION WITH THEFT OF SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VERNON THOMPSON, age 51, a resident of New Orleans, was sentenced today in federal court by U. S. District Judge Feldman to five (5) months probation for theft of Social Security benefits, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition, the defendant was ordered to make full restitution.

According to court documents, THOMPSON pled guilty admitting that from approximately May 28, 2006 through December 2007, the Social Security Administration continued to deposit funds payable to THOMPSON’s wife into to her checking account after she died on May 28, 2006. THOMPSON accessed and withdrew that money on a regular basis, using his deceased wife’s ATM card and PIN, resulting in a total loss to the government of $12,334.00.

The case was investigated by the U. S. Secret Service, and was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis.
