COVINGTON MAN INDICTED ON FEDERAL GUN CONTROL ACT CHARGES

CODY CALLENDER, 23, a resident of Covington, Louisiana, was charged in a two-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury today for possession of a firearm by a person who has been convicted in of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and possession of an unregistered sawed-off shotgun, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to the indictment, on February 9, 2009, CALLENDER knowingly possessed a Mossberg Model 500AT, 12 gauge shotgun. The shotgun was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record as required by law. It is also alleged that on February 6, 2006, CALLENDER had previously been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence in St. Tammany Parish.
If convicted, CALLENDER faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a fine of up to $250,000, and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Sharan E. Lieberman.
