FORMER MAIL CARRIER PLEADS GUILTY TO OBSTRUCTING MAIL

ADAM JONES, age 23, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty yesterday in federal court before U. S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey to a one count bill of information for obstructing United States mail, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to factual basis, ADAM JONES was employed as a mail carrier at the Main Post Office in Gretna, Louisiana in December 2008,. On December 18, 2008, a tip was received that United States mail had been dumped in a dumpster in Gretna. Acting on that tip, employees of the Post Office confirmed that 150 pieces of direct mail advertising had been dumped in this particular dumpster. Further investigation revealed that the mail belonged to a particular portion of a route assigned to JONES. After being confronted with the evidence, JONES confessed to dumping the mail.

The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of single six (6) months imprisonment and a $5,000 fine. Sentencing has been scheduled for September 29, 2009 at 10:00 A.M.

The case was investigated by special agents from the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney Matt Chester.
