TWO ALIENS INDICTED FOR BEING STOWAWAYS ON A VESSEL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JAMES DANIEL TORRES CARDENAS, age 33, and CESAR AUGUSTO ANGULO ROSSI, age 30, both residents of Colombia, were charged in a one-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for being stowaways on a vessel, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, TORRES and ANGULO, with the intent of obtaining transportation, boarded and secreted themselves aboard a the motor vessel Kiwi Trader, in Venezuela, outside the jurisdiction of the United States, without the consent of the owner, charterer, master and person in command of said vessel and did with like intent remain aboard said vessel after the vessel left Venezuela, and were thereon when the vessel entered Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana on or about September 28, 2009.

If convicted for being stowaways on a vessel, TORRES and ANGULO each face a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of $250,000.00 and one year of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendants must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by United States Customs and Border Protection and the United States Coast Guard..

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U. S. Attorney Robert Weir.
