ALIEN FACES FEDERAL INDICTMENT FOR ILLEGAL REENTRY
October 22, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GREGORIO GOMEZ, age 29, a resident of Mexico, was charged in a one-count indictment today by a Federal Grand Jury for illegal re-entry by an alien previously removed, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to the indictment, GOMEZ is an alien who had previously been deported from the United States and was found in Tangipahoa Parish on approximately October 8, 2009 without obtaining the proper consent to reenter the United States. The indictment also alleges that GOMEZ was previously convicted of an aggravated felony.
If convicted, GOMEZ faces a possible maximum sentence of twenty (20) years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000.00 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U. S. Attorney Robert Weir.
