LAPLACE MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO STEALING VA FUNDS

October 22, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HENRY TILLMAN, age 24, a resident of LaPlace, Louisiana, pleaded guilty in federal court today before U. S. District Judge Carl Barbier to one count of theft of government funds relating to his role in stealing a Veterans Affairs disability check sent to a veteran, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, in July 2008,the Department of Veterans Affairs sent a check for disability benefits in the amount of $13,154.00 to a LaPlace, Louisiana veteran. The veteran never received the check because unbeknownst to the VA, the veteran had moved to a new address and sold the property to another individual. HENRY TILLMAN admitted that he coordinated with another individual to take the check, forge the veteran’s signature, and deposit it into his own bank account. TILLMAN then withdrew the amount from his account and divided the proceeds with the other individual.

TILLMAN faces a possible maximum sentence of ten (10) years imprisonment and $250,000 fine. Sentencing has been scheduled for January 14, 2010.

The case was investigated by the U. S. Secret Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Jordan Ginsberg.
