ALABAMA MAN INDICTED FOR MURDER OF FISHING BOAT CAPTAIN

October 23, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THOMAS J. POOLE, IV, age 44, a resident of Foley, Alabama, was charged by the Federal Grand Jury with second-degree murder in a one-count indictment for his role in the death of Michael Holman, age 53, also a resident of Alabama, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, Michael Holman was killed while captaining a seagoing fishing vessel, the Miss Sharlott, on October 7, 2009. At the time of the incident, the Miss Sharlott was located approximately eighteen miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Court documents further allege that POOLE attacked Holman in the early morning hours of October 7, 2009, stabbed him numerous times in the back and chest, and ultimately caused his death.

If convicted of second-degree murder, POOLE faces a maximum term of life in prison, a fine of $250,000, and five (5) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The investigation is being conducted by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Rick Veters and Jordan Ginsberg.
