HAVERHILL MAN CHARGED WITH MAKING FALSE STATEMENTS TO MEDICARE

BOSTON, MA - A Haverhill man was convicted today in federal court of making false statements to Medicare, a federally funded program.

Acting United States Attorney Michael K. Loucks and Susan J. Waddell, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Boston Regional Office of Investigations, announced today that RAYMOND G. AUTIELLO, age 52, of Haverhill, pleaeguilty before U.S. District Judge George A. O’Toole to making False Statements to a Federal Agency and Aiding and Abetting.

At today’s plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that AUTIELLO, the owner and operator of a diagnotic testing service, Universal Mobile Services, attempted, fraudulently and without authorization, to receive reimbursement for physician services to which the company was not entitled. Specifically, in August 2003, Universal Mobile Services submitted an application for a New Hampshire Medicare group provider number to Medicare. This application contained forged signatures of a licensed, practicing physician, and was submitted without the physician’s knowledge. The application, if approved, would have allowed Universal Mobile Services to receive reimbursements from Medicare on behalf of the physician.

Judge O’Toole scheduled sentencing for July 28, 2009. AUTIELLO faces up to 5 years imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release and a $5,000 fine.

The case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shelbey D. Wright of Loucks’ Health Care Fraud Unit.
