CANTON MAN SENTENCED FOR BANK ROBBERY

BOSTON, MA - A Canton man was sentenced today in federal court on bank robbery charges.

United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Field Division, announced today that MICHAEL T. KENNEDY, age 32, of Canton, MA, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Patti B. Saris to 96 months imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. KENNEDY pled guilty to bank robbery on December 10, 2008.

On the morning of March 14, 2007, co-defendant RICHARD PIONE entered the East Boston Savings Bank in Saugus Massachusetts. He approached a teller and handed her a note indicating that this was a robbery and that she should give him the money from her drawer. The teller complied and handed him $2,490.00 in U.S. currency. PIONE exited the bank and got into a waiting vehicle being driven by KENNEDY. The teller followed PIONE out to the vehicle and was able to record its make, model and license plate. She immediately conveyed the information to the Saugus Police, and a short time later, the vehicle was stopped and PIONE and KENNEDY were detained. During a vehicle search $2,490.00 was recovered. PIONE previously pled guilty and was sentenced to 46 months imprisonment in 2008.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s Bank Robbery Task Force and the Saugus Police Department. It was prosecuted by Kenneth G. Shine of Sullivan’s Major Crime Unit.
