LAHEY CLINIC HOSPITAL PAYS $843,896 TO RESOLVE IMPROPER BILLING ALLEGATIONS

Boston, MA - Lahey Clinic Hospital, Inc., which operates an acute care hospital in Burlington, Massachusetts, has agreed to pay the United States to settle allegations that it improperly submitted claims to Medicare from 2001 to 2005.

Acting United States Attorney Michael K. Loucks and Susan J. Waddell, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, announced today that Lahey Clinic Hospital, Inc. has paid $843,896.85 to settle these allegations.

The settlement agreement resolves government allegations that Lahey Clinic Hospital, Inc. improperly submitted claims to Medicare for drug infusion therapy, chemotherapy, and blood transfusion therapy services for multiple units of these services when only one unit per date of service should have been billed to Medicare. These improper claims resulted in
Lahey Clinic Hospital, Inc receiving a higher amount of Medicare reimbursement than was authorized.

This matter was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. It was handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney John O’Brien of the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office.
