FORMER BROCKTON POLICE OFFICER AND TWO OTHERS INDICTED FOR MARRIAGE FRAUD

BOSTON, MA - A former Brockton police officer and two others individuals were charged today in federal court with conspiracy to commit marriage fraud and entering into a marriage to evade the immigration laws.

Acting United States Attorney Michael K. Loucks and Bruce M. Foucart, Special Agent in Charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Investigations in Boston, announced today that LON L. ELLIOTT, age 47, of Abington, MA, LILLY REMPEL, age 28, of Taunton, MA and MAURA CARNEY, age 45, of Brockton, MA were charged in an Indictment with conspiracy to commit marriage fraud and entering into a marriage for the purpose of evading the immigration laws.

The Indictment alleges that ELLIOTT, a U.S. citizen and former Brockton police officer, and REMPEL, a German citizen, married so that REMPEL could remain in the United States. At the time of the allegedly fraudulent marriage, ELLIOTT was a Brockton Police officer. The Indictment also alleges that CARNEY recruited ELLIOTT to marry REMPEL. It is further alleged that CARNEY had previously attempted to recruit other individuals to marry REMPEL before REMPEL married ELLIOTT.

If convicted on these charges, ELLIOTT, REMPEL and CARNEY each face up to five years imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine on each count.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey M. Cohen of Loucks’ Public Corruption Unit.

The details contained in the Indictment are allegations. The defendants are presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
