MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO ASSAULT AT FMC-DEVENS

BOSTON, MA - A man serving a sentence at Federal Medical Center (FMC) Devens pled guilty today in federal court to assault of another inmate resulting in serious bodily injury.

Acting United States Attorney Michael L. Loucks and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Field Division, announced today that ANGEL GONZALES, age 40, who is serving a 96-month federal sentence at FMC-Devens on the conviction for possession and sale of stolen firearms, pled guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Dennis F. Saylor, IV, to assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

At today’s plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that on December 16, 2006, GONZALES intentionally struck another inmate in the head multiple times with his fist. As the result of the assault, the inmate suffered multiple fractures to his face and underwent reconstructive surgery.

If convicted, GONZALES faces up to 10 years of imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

Judge Saylor scheduled sentencing for December 21, 2009.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maxim Grinberg of Loucks’ Major Crimes Unit.
