BALTIMORE MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IN PRISON FOR BEING
A FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM AND AMMUNITION

BALTIMORE, Maryland - Jermaine Powell, age 34, of Baltimore was sentenced today to 15 years in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. At today’s hearing, Chief U.S. District Judge Benson E. Legg enhanced Powell’s sentence after finding that Powell was an armed career criminal, based on his previous convictions for narcotics distribution and robbery and also ordered him to pay a fine of $500.

According to the statement of facts presented to the court at his October 13, 2006 guilty plea, on September 22, 2005, Baltimore City police officers searched Powell’s residence, recovering a Bersa, 380 Auto caliber pistol and a box of Winchester .380 Auto caliber ammunition. Powell told authorities that the firearm belonged to him and that he had purchased the ammunition from a store in Port Covington, South Baltimore. The store’s ammunition logs confirm that the ammunition was sold to Powell.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein thanked the Baltimore City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for their investigative work in this case. Mr. Rosenstein also praised Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie A. Gallagher, who prosecuted the case.
