HYATTSVILLE ARMED CAREER CRIMINAL EXILED TO OVER 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF A GUN
Baltimore, Maryland - U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte sentenced Gerald Douglas Rhodes, age 36, of Hyattsville, Maryland, today to 125 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for being a felon in possession of a gun. Judge Messitte enhanced Rhodes’ sentence upon finding that he is an armed career criminal based on previous convictions for robbery with a deadly weapon, felony robbery and possession with intent to distribute drugs.
The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Theresa R. Stoop of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Baltimore Field Division; Chief Roberto L. Hylton of the Prince George’s County Police Department; Chief J. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department; and Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn F. Ivey.
According to Rhodes’ plea agreement, on December 8, 2008, Rhodes gave his father money to buy a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun for him. Rhodes’ father bought the gun from a store in North Carolina and gave it to his son. Gerald Rhodes then transported the gun to his apartment in Maryland, where law enforcement recovered the weapon during a search of his home later that month.
Mr. Rosenstein commended Assistant U.S. Attorney Mara B. Zusman and Stuart A. Berman, who prosecuted this case.
