JURY FINDS TWO BALTIMORE MEN GUILTY OF WITNESS MURDER
Total of Eight Defendants Convicted for Murder of Carl Stanley Lackl
Baltimore, Maryland – A federal jury today found Patrick Albert Byers, Jr., and Frank Keith Goodman, both ages 23 and of Baltimore, guilty of the murder of Carl Stanley Lackl on July 2, 2007. The indictment alleged that Byers and Goodman, along with several co-conspirators, murdered Mr. Lackl outside his home in Baltimore County because he was an eyewitness who was expected to testify that he saw Byers murder Larry Haynes in Baltimore City.
U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein announced that law enforcement officials will decline to comment on the verdict at this time because the jury still must decide whether Byers should be sentenced to death for his role in the crime. U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett instructed the jurors to return to court on April 27, 2009 when the penalty phase of the trial will begin. Goodman faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Judge Bennett scheduled his sentencing for July 17, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.
Six other individuals pleaded guilty to their involvement in the murder of Carl Lackl and are awaiting sentencing.

Mr. Rosenstein commended Assistant United States Attorneys John Purcell and Bryan Giblin, who are prosecuting the case.
