OWINGS MILLS FELON EXILED TO OVER 12 YEARS IN PRISON FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING
Baltimore, Maryland - U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz sentenced Derrick Wesley, age 37, of Owings Mills, Maryland, today to 150 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute cocaine base (crack). Judge Motz enhanced Wesley’s sentence upon finding that he is a career offender based on four previous drug convictions.
The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Theresa R. Stoop of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Baltimore Field Division; Baltimore City State’s Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein; and Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III.
“This sentencing is a prime example of ATF's relentless pursuit in placing the worst of the worst behind bars,” says ATF Special Agent in Charge Theresa Stoop.
According to Wesley’s plea agreement, on October 15, 2009, Baltimore Police officers responded to a car accident in the 2500 block of North Howard Street, in Baltimore. Upon arrival, the officers found Wesley in the driver's seat, acting erratically and speaking incoherently. Wesley admitted to having taken drugs. During a safety pat-down of Wesley, an officer seized a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. Officers also searched the car and seized a box of .45 caliber ammunition containing 28 bullets, a plastic bag containing approximately 40 grams of crack and $6,030.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the Baltimore Police Department, ATF and the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office for their work in this investigation and prosecution. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant United States Attorney Benjamin M. Block, who prosecuted the case.
