SILVER SPRING FELON EXILED TO OVER 6 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ILLEGALLY POSSESSING A GUN
Greenbelt, Maryland - U.S. District Judge Roger W. Titus sentenced Deon Erique Sherrod, age 31, of Silver Spring, Maryland, to 77 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for being a felon in possession of a firearm. At the sentencing on June 3, 2011, Judge Titus ordered the Sherrod’s federal sentence be served consecutive to his 30 year state sentence. Sherrod was convicted in Montgomery County in connection with a shooting that occurred five days before the arrest that led to this federal conviction.
The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Theresa R. Stoop of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Baltimore Field Division; Chief J. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department; and Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
According to Sherrod’s plea agreement, on July 31, 2009, Montgomery County Police officers attempted to arrest Sherrod on an open warrant. Sherrod fled when the officers approached and the officers pursued Sherrod. When the officers reached Sherrod there was a struggle, during which officers found and removed a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol from Sherrod’s waistband. Sherrod was arrested. Sherrod had previously been convicted of 2nd degree assault and carrying a handgun in 2008 in Prince George’s County; transporting a gun by vehicle in 2001 in Montgomery County; and robbery in 2000 in Prince George’s County. As a result of these convictions, Sherrod was prohibited from possessing a gun.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the ATF, Montgomery County Police Department and Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office for their work in this investigation and thanked Assistant United States Attorney Mara Zusman Greenberg, who prosecuted the case.
