U.S. ATTORNEY RETURNS TO JAIL
Second Annual “Youth Empowerment and Awareness Summit” Held Today at Baltimore City Detention Center
Baltimore, Maryland - Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein joined public officials, law enforcement officers, corrections employees and community organizers this morning to speak to approximately 120 juveniles in custody on adult charges at the Baltimore City Detention Center. The summit, organized by the Family League of Baltimore City with the support of state and local officials, is designed to warn young offenders about the consequences of crime and inform them about opportunities to change their lives.
“I went to jail today to make sure that these young men and women understand the consequences they will face if they return to a life of violent crime, and I am proud to work with the many dedicated organizations that are helping to bring hope and opportunities to those who choose to remain on the right side of the law,” said U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. “The best way to reduce crime permanently is to prevent teenagers from making bad choices that take them down the road that leads to decades in a federal prison far from home with no probation and no parole.”
Mr. Rosenstein spoke about a Baltimore man who once spent time at BCDC and now lives alone in a 9’ by 12’ concrete cell in Colorado and discussed recent cases of Maryland teenagers sentenced to serve life in federal prison.
Mr. Rosenstein thanked the participants in the program and expressed his appreciation to Troy Williams, Community Outreach Coordinator for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
