Student Volunteer Internships
The United States Attorney's Office offers a limited number of student volunteer internships throughout the year. Specific duties vary widely depending on the organizational unit the intern is placed in, but may involve such assignments as researching legal issues, assisting in preparation for trial, carrying out special projects, etc. Interns may also have opportunities to observe trials, depositions, meetings with clients, etc., and participate in other similar events to obtain a comprehensive perspective of the office.
We accept applications from college (undergraduate and graduate students) and second and third year law students. During the school year, students are scheduled for a minimum of twelve hours a week, or more if their schedules permit. In the summer, most students work 40 hours a week. Individuals must obtain permission from their school to participate in the program and generally receive academic credit for their internship experience
Applicants for this programs must be United States citizens and are required to submit a cover letter, resume, and academic transcript. Your cover letter should indicate when you would be able to begin, the projected duration of the internship, the number of hours you would be available to work each week, whether the internship would be for academic credit, and a brief discussion of what kind of experience you are hoping to gain during the assignment.
Because of the length of time it takes for pre-appointment background checks to be completed, internship arrangements with the U.S. Attorney's Office must generally be made at least two months in advance of anticipated start date. The background check includes a fingerprint check and a thorough review of the applicant's background to determine if there have been any significant problems with illicit drug use, alcohol abuse, unresolved financial indebtedness, failure to pay income taxes, criminal record, etc.
Although we can offer positions to only a very small percentage of those who interested in serving as interns, every applicant is of equal importance to us, and we genuinely appreciate the interest expressed in this office.
