ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY MAN INDICTED ON WEAPONS CHARGES AND WITNESS TAMPERING

St. Louis, MO: Michael Roy Webers was indicted on weapons charges and witness tampering, Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap announced today.

MICHAEL ROY WEBERS, Doe Run, Missouri, was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 24, 2009, on one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and one felony count of attempted witness tampering by intimidation.  The indictment states that the alleged crimes occurred in April and September 2009.  He was arrested Wednesday by Sheriff’s deputies and will appear in federal court in St. Louis.

If convicted, possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000, and attempted witness tampering by intimidation carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000.

Reap commended the work performed on the case by the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, the Mineral Area Drug Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Assistant United States Attorney John Sauer, who is handling the cases for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

This case was investigated and prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which seeks to prevent violent crime through enforcement of federal firearms laws, such as the law prohibiting convicted felons from possessing firearms.

The charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations, and defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
