FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JURY CONVICTS FORMER BRANSON MAN
FOR TAX EVASION
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bradley J. Schlozman, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced today that a former Branson, Mo., man has been convicted by a federal jury for tax evasion.
Robert Lee Cavins, Jr., of Chanute, Kan., formerly of Branson, was found guilty on Wednesday, March 21, 2006, of evading the payment of $119,595 in federal income tax owed for the years 1992, 1993 and 1994.
Cavins was a tax protester who failed to file income tax returns during that three-year period, Schlozman said. Cavins also placed money and property – including his former home and chiropractic office – in the names of other persons and entities (including trusts such as Cavins Residential Trust and Cavins Chiropractic Trust) and deposited income from his chiropractic business and elsewhere into bank accounts in the names of other persons and entities.
Cavins used $70,000 in cash to fund a bank account for Advantage Trust at Swiss American Bank in Antigua.
Following the presentation of evidence, the jury in U.S. District Court in Springfield deliberated about an hour before returning the guilty verdict to U.S. District Judge Richard E. Dorr, ending a trial that began Monday, March 19, 2006.
Under federal statutes, Cavins could be subject to a sentence of up to five years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to $250,000. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas C. Bunch. It was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.
