FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KC MAN INDICTED FOR CARJACKING

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was indicted by a federal grand jury today for carjacking.

Cornelius D. Felton, 22, of Kansas City, was charged in a two-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City. Today’s indictment replaces a federal criminal complaint that was filed against Felton on Nov. 19, 2008.

Today’s indictment alleges that Felton stole a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee from its owner on May 4, 2008. Felton is also charged with using a firearm during that crime of violence.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the original criminal complaint, Felton approached the owner of the vehicle as she was getting out of her car in the parking lot of the Chipotle Restaurant at 501 W. 75th St., Kansas City. Felton allegedly pointed a revolver at her and demanded her car keys. The victim was ordered to place her purse on the ground and leave, the affidavit says, at which time she ran to a nearby house and called the police. Police officers observed the stolen vehicle, which was being driven by Felton, while on patrol the next day in the area of 30th and Prospect.

Wood cautioned that the charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul S. Becker. It was investigated by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
