FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PROJECT CEASEFIRE

KC MAN SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS

FOR ILLEGAL FIREARM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for illegally possessing a firearm.

Alphonzo Henderson, 45, of Kansas City, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ortrie D. Smith this morning to 21 years and 10 months in federal prison without parole.

On Oct. 30, 2007, Henderson was convicted at trial of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Henderson, who has prior criminal felony convictions for assault, burglary and sodomy, was in possession of a loaded Mossberg .410-gauge shotgun. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition.

Kansas City police officers responded to a complaint of a suspicious man with a gun on Oct. 22, 2006. The calling party said that his mother and her husband, Henderson, were arguing at the residence next door and that Henderson had a gun. When the officers entered Henderson’s residence, they found him and his wife in the bedroom, with the shotgun lying on the bed.

This case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Stefan C. Hughes. It was investigated by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Project Ceasefire

Project Ceasefire, launched in October 1999, is a cooperative initiative by federal and local law enforcement and the Kansas City Crime Commission that targets for federal prosecution persons who unlawfully use or possess firearms.
