FORMER EVERTON POSTMASTER PLEADS GUILTY TO MISAPPROPRIATING FUNDS
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a former Everton, Mo., postmaster pleaded guilty in federal court today to misappropriating thousands of dollars of postal funds.
Wayne A. Misner, 39, of Everton, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Richard E. Dorr this morning to the charge contained in a Jan. 23, 2008, federal indictment.
Misner, who was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for approximately 13 years, was assigned as the postmaster of the rural post office in Everton at the time of the offense. By pleading guilty today, Misner admitted that he misappropriated more than $10,000 from March 2006 to Sept. 21, 2006. The government contends that he misappropriated $52,678.
Misner collected money from the sale of money orders, postage stamps, and other postage-related products, which he failed to remit or deposit, or to turn over to an authorized Postal Service representative as required by Postal Service regulations. During this same period, Misner also failed to report money order sales as required by Postal Service regulations. Instead, he used, exchanged, and misappropriated these moneys for other unauthorized purposes.
Under federal statutes, Misner could be subject to a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to $250,000. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robyn L. McKee. It was investigated by the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Postal Service.
