FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NELSON PROMOTED TO EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT;

POWELL APPOINTED CIRCUIT JUDGE

            KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced today that Dan Nelson has been appointed as the Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney to replace Brent Powell, who has been appointed to the Office of Circuit Judge of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit.

            “Brent Powell provided invaluable service to the citizens of the Western District, and he will continue to promote the cause of justice in his new role,” said Wood. “I am pleased that Dan Nelson has now accepted this important leadership responsibility. I have great respect for the high standards of professionalism and excellence that he brings to this position.”

            In his new capacity, Nelson will be involved in the overall management of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and will focus on the most important cases, priorities, initiatives, and administrative matters of the office.

            Nelson previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Computer Crimes and Child Exploitation Unit. In that capacity, he prosecuted cases that included counterfeiting, computer fraud, trademark infringement, and child sexual predators. Among those cases was an indictment charging a group of primarily Kenyan nationals with stealing the identities of hundreds of nursing home residents in Kansas City, which were allegedly used to seek more than $13.1 million in fraudulent tax refunds.

            Nelson grew up in St. Joseph, Mo., where he graduated from Central High School in 1994. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a 2002 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he was an attorney at a top national law firm.
