JURY CONVICTS MOUNTAIN VIEW MAN OF

METH, MARIJUANA, ILLEGAL FIREARMS

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced today that a Mountain View, Mo., man has been convicted by a federal jury for illegally possessing methamphetamine, marijuana and firearms.

Joseph Pulliam, 44, of Mountain View, was found guilty on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2007, of being a felon in possession of firearms and of being in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.

Pulliam was in possession of a New England Firearms 12-gauge shotgun and a Marlin .22-caliber rifle and ammunition. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Pulliam has prior felony convictions for unlawful use of a weapon, assault, arson, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a controlled substance. The firearms and narcotics were discovered during a search of Pulliam’s residence on Nov. 22, 2006.

Following the presentation of evidence, the jury in the U.S. District Court in Springfield deliberated less than an hour before returning the guilty verdicts to U.S. District Judge Ortrie D. Smith, ending a trial that began the same day.

Under federal statutes, Pulliam could be subject to a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison without parole. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

This case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James J. Kelleher. It was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
