KANSAS WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY TO EMBEZZLING

MORE THAN $1 MILLION FROM EMPLOYER

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Basehor, Kan., woman pleaded guilty in federal court today to embezzling more than $1 million from her former employer.

Brandy M. Wheeler, 31, of Basehor, waived her right to a grand jury and pleaded guilty before U.S. Chief District Judge Fernando J. Gaitan this morning to an information that charges her with bank fraud.

Wheeler became the comptroller for several entities owned by VCW Holding Co. LLC in April 2002. Wheeler’s employment agreements were with VCW Accounting Services LLC, and her income came from VCW Holding Co. LLC, which maintained a business office in Kansas City, Mo., from which Wheeler worked.

In a series of at least 22 separate transactions between April 10, 2003, and May 2, 2007, Wheeler embezzled at least $1.1 million from her employer by making fraudulent wire transfers from VCW’s bank account into the bank account of a business entity she created called CJB Consulting Services. After transferring the funds to CJB, which had no legitimate business relationship with VCW, Wheeler then transferred the funds for her personal use.

Under federal statutes, Wheeler could be subject to a sentence of up to 30 years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to $ 1 million and an order of restitution. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian P. Casey. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
