kC man sentenced for armed bank robbery

March 22, 2011

KANSAS CITY, Mo.– Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for using a firearm to rob Commerce Bank about a year ago.

Derrick T. Hubbard, 21, of Kansas City, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to seven years in federal prison without parole.

On Sept. 8, 2010, Hubbard pleaded guilty to using a firearm during a crime of violence. Hubbard admitted that he stole $11,253 from Commerce Bank, 4604 Wornall, Kansas City, on April 22, 2010.

Hubbard used a loaded FEG .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun to rob the bank. After entering the bank, Hubbard demanded that a teller take him behind the teller line, where he took cash from several teller drawers then fled.

Shortly after the robbery, Kansas City police officers were in the vicinity of the bank doing an area canvass when they spotted Hubbard, who was arrested. Police officers later located $11,253 inside a black backpack in a nearby dumpster. The backpack also contained a loaded handgun.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Michael Green. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department.
