RALEIGH - United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that yesterday in federal court ANTHONY HASSAN RUSSELL, 24, of West Palm Beach, Florida, entered his guilty plea before United States District Judge James C. Dever, III, for conspiring to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances and the use and carrying of a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime.

On May 1, 2008, a Superseding Criminal Information was filed. On September 22, 2007, co-conspirators, IVAN CORREA, JR., 21, of Lake Worth, Florida, and ALEXANDER EUGENE OXLEY, 24, of West Palm Beach, Florida, traveled by train from West Palm Beach, Florida to Raleigh, North Carolina, where they were picked up at the train station by ANTHONY TERRELL RUSSELL, 23, of Raleigh, North Carolina. ANTHONY HASSAN RUSSELL brought a Mossburg 12-gauge shotgun, CORREA brought a Glock 9-millimeter pistol.

On September 24, 2007, ANTHONY TERRELL RUSSELL, ANTHONY HASSAN RUSSELL, CORREA, OXLEY, and BRANDON MICHAEL JONES, 20, of Raleigh, North Carolina, armed with the Mossburg 12-gauge shotgun and the Glock 9-millimter pistol, went to a residence in Raleigh where they believed illegal drugs were stored. ANTHONY TERRELL RUSSELL pointed out the residence and drove off. The others entered the residence which was occupied by a woman. The woman was taken to the bathroom and tied up, and her jewelry, cell-phone, and car were stolen.

On September 25, 2007, ANTHONY HASSAN RUSSELL, CORREA, OXLEY, and ASHLEY LAMONT BOST, 20, of Raleigh, North Carolina, armed with the Mossburg 12-gauge shotgun, the Glock 9-millimeter pistol, and an Astra .357 revolver that ANTHONY TERRELL RUSSELL had given to OXLEY, traveled to another residence in Raleigh where they believed illegal drugs were being stored. BOST stayed in the car while OXLEY, CORREA, and ANTHONY HASSAN RUSSELL entered the residence. The occupants, five adults and three children, were held at gunpoint, while a male adult victim was taken upstairs to retrieve drugs and money. Cash in the amount of $1,000 was turned over and the defendants left the residence.

On April 17, 2008, a Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment against ANTHONY TERRELL RUSSELL, BRANDON MICHAEL JONES, and ASHLEY LAMONT BOST. On April 7, 2008, CORREA pled guilty to a Superseding Criminal Information.On February 20, 2008, a Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment against ALEXANDER EUGENE OXLEY.On January 23, 2008, a Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment against ANTHONY HASSAN RUSSELL.

“One can only imagine how afraid the victims of these crimes were as members of the group invaded their homes, took them hostage and stole money and jewelry. These types of crimes are on the rise in Raleigh and with the Eastern District of North Carolina. My office is working closely with federal, state and local law enforcement ot attack violent crime and to reverse this trend. The prosecution of these offenders is agood step in that effort,” commented Mr. Holding.

Investigation of the case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Raleigh Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Eric Goulian served as prosecutor for the government.
