FORMER AAFES EMPLOYEE SENTENCED FOR
THEFT AND EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGE
NEW BERN - United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that in federal court on August 13, 2010, Chief United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced TINA M. BATTKO, 38, Sanford, North Carolina, to five years probation with 180 days of home confinement as a special condition of probation. Additionally, the Court imposed restitution in the amount of $32,000.00, in accordance with the stipulations of the Plea Agreement.
A Criminal Information was filed on March 24, 2010. On May 3, 2010, BATTKO pled guilty to theft and embezzlement of government property, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 641. BATTKO was a civilian employee of the Army / Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) on the Pope Air Force Base Military Reservation. She was convicted for her role in embezzling funds from the AAFES store where she worked from May 2008 until December 2009.
Investigation of this case was conducted by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Special Assistant United States Attorney Alexander Schneider represented the government.
