Law Enforcement Officers Seized Over 400 Lbs of Marijuana
STATESVILLE, N.C. – An Alexander Co. man was sentenced yesterday, June 5, 2012, by U.S. District Judge Richard L. Voorhees to serve 10 years in prison for drug trafficking-related offenses, announced Anne M. Tompkins, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. Gary Richard Lackey, 65, of Hiddenite, N.C. was also ordered to serve eight years of supervised release following his prison term.
U.S. Attorney Tompkins is joined in making today’s announcement by Brock D. Nicholson, Special Agent in Charge of ICE/Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Atlanta and the Carolinas, Sheriff Phillip H. Redmond of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Chris Bowman of the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
According to official court documents and court proceedings, in February 2011 law enforcement officers seized more than 400 pounds of marijuana from Lackey’s residence and his business. Specifically, the officers seized from Lackey’s residence approximately six pounds of marijuana, Ziploc baggies, digital scales, two Smith & Wesson .38 special revolvers and eight long-arm firearms. The officers recovered more than 400 pounds of marijuana and ammunition for the firearms from Lackey’s business. In September 2011, Lackey pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute over 100 kilograms of marijuana. He was charged in a criminal bill of information filed on September 16, 2011.
Lackey has been in local federal custody since February 2011. He will be transferred into the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility. All federal sentences are served without the possibility of parole.
The investigation was led by HSI with the assistance of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution for the government was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven R. Kaufman of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte.
