
U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon to Participate in Media Conference at Minot State University to Observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month
BISMARCK - U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon will participate in a media
conference on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Westlie Room, 3rd Floor of
the Student Center on the campus of Minot State University, 500 University Avenue
West, Minot, N.D. U.S. Attorney Purdon will discuss a recent Department of Justice
grant of $300,000 to the Rural Crime and Justice Center at Minot State University aimed
at reducing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on campus
and to commemorate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Other participants
will include:

* Dr. Gary Rabe, Executive Director, Rural Crime and Justice Center, Minot
State University
* Dr. Dick Jenkins, Vice President for Student Affairs, Minot State University
* Jason Olson, Chief of Police, City of Minot
* Dena Filler, Director, Minot Domestic Violence Crisis Center
In Bismarck, U.S. Attorney Purdon said, “I am pleased to join officials from Minot
State University to celebrate this important public safety grant and to observe October as
Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This grant from the Department of Justice will
help ensure that Minot State University’s campus remains a safe place for the women
who study and work there.”
“This grant demonstrates MSU’s commitment to providing a safe and secure
learning environment for it students,” said Dr. Gary Rabe, Executive Director of the Rural
Crime and Justice Center at Minot State University.
The grant to the Rural Crime and Justice Center is from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. The grant is part of a program designed for institutions of higher education to establish multidisciplinary consortia to combat violent crime against women on campus. Efforts financed by this grant will be designed to enhance victim services, implement prevention and education programs, and develop and strengthen security and investigative strategies in order to prevent these types of crimes. The grant will support campus victim services, law enforcement, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on college campuses.
