Neighborhood Drug Notification Project
This program is based on the
underlying premise that residents are witnesses to neighborhood drug trafficking,
that entire neighborhoods are victimized by drug trafficking, and that neighborhood
residents are essential to our anti-drug efforts. We propose to meet the above
purposes by recognizing the victimization that neighborhood residents experience.
We, as a society, pay a high price for drug crimes.
Currently, we have 327 Neighborhood Drug Notification Project cases with a total
of 4,008 flyers sent out to neighborhood residents. The USAO Victim Witness
Unit has reached out to the following Nebraska counties with Neighborhood Drug
Notification Project flyers: Red Willow, Lincoln, Buffalo, Hall, Lancaster,
Douglas, Sarpy, Adams, Morrill, Dawson, & Scotts Bluff.
There are two main purposes for the Project: To inform & empower
neighborhood residents-this is important not just for the effective
administration of justice, but because of the need for positive community attitudes.
The Project provides an avenue for neighborhood residents to have a voice in
the criminal justice system, and to create awareness & encourage
participation-many people are frustrated by what they see as a lack
of action by law enforcement & because they feel nothing will happen, they
don't bother to get involved.
There is a similar project implemented for gun cases filed under the Project
Safe Neighborhoods program. Flyers have been sent out to 728 households in a
total of 83 gun related cases.
