United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg announced that Jay Gilmore, 27, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was sentenced on May 24, 2012, to 6 years in prison by United States District Judge Richard G. Kopf, for receipt and distribution of child pornography.  After his release from prison, Gilmore will be required to serve a 5 year term of supervised release and be registered as a sex offender.

On October 2, 2010, while conducting an undercover operation, an investigator with the Nebraska State Patrol identified a computer that was able to access child pornography images from computers that were using file sharing software publicly available on the Internet through Peer-to-Peer Network.  The investigation determined that the Internet Protocol (IP) address was assigned to an individual’s residence at which Gilmore lived.

In November of 2010, Nebraska State Patrol agents went to the residence. Gilmore admitted to downloading child pornography through a Limewire program and from internet web sites, and gave written consent to the agents to seize items of computer equipment.  A forensic examination of the computers and related equipment revealed approximately 500 videos and digital images of child pornography.

This case was brought as a part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
