Project Safe Neighborhoods

Project Safe Neighborhoods is a national project to create safer communities by using every available means to reduce gun violence. This has become a priority of President Bush and Attorney General Ashcroft. Project Safe Neighborhoods does this by networking with existing programs and heightening coordination among federal, state and local criminal justice agencies with an emphasis on tactical information gathering, and aggressive enforcement and prosecution of crimes involving gun violence. Project Safe Neighborhoods will coordinate with Project Impact, a program designed to stop youth gun violence in Omaha through a method of prevention and intervention.

In the District of Nebraska, the major focus will be in the investigation and prosecution of felon in possession and armed career criminal cases. We are sending the message to those convicted of felonies that if you are possessing firearms we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law "If you commit gun crime, you will do hard time". This nationwide project seeks to promote cooperation among the criminal justice agencies and community organizations, increase awareness, develop related initiatives and enhance the deterrent effect of the Project Safe Neighborhoods.
