Criminal Division
CRIMINAL DIVISION
The United States Attorney is the chief federal law enforcement official within his or her district. Although some larger states have more than one federal district within their borders, the District of New Hampshire is defined by the boundaries of the State of New Hampshire. Thus, the United States Attorney is charged with prosecuting federal crimes that occur, in whole or in part, anywhere in the State of New Hampshire.
The Criminal division is led by Criminal Chief Robert Kinsella and Deputy Chief Robert Veiga, both of whom carry case loads in addition to managing the Division. The Division is now organized into three sections - a Violent Crime Section, a White Collar Crime Section and an Appellate Unit. Attorneys assigned to each section specialize in the work of the section, but also handle cases in other subject areas. By mixing the case load of the attorneys assigned to each section, the Criminal Division has developed a staff of senior attorneys who have expertise in a broad array of criminal prosecution and are comfortable prosecuting any violation of the federal criminal law.
Division Attorneys work close with the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the New Hampshire State Police, among numerous others, to conduct investigations into suspected criminal activity. Criminal Division attorneys routinely prosecute violations of the controlled drug laws; various fraud schemes including wire, mail, bank, insurance, credit card, tax and bankruptcy fraud; firearm, immigration and child pornography offenses; violent crimes including robbery, car jacking and kidnapping; and high tech crimes including computer hacking and intellectual property offenses. Division attorneys are responsible for coordinating Grand Jury presentations, including the initiation of formal charges by indictment or information, after which they represent the United States in all manner of pre-trial proceedings including sentencing; direct appeal, and habeas corpus. Division attorneys practice exclusively in the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
