Passaic county, n.J., man sentenced to 46 months in prison for oxycodone distribution scheme

NEWARK, N.J. – A Passaic County, N.J., man was sentenced today to 46 months in prison for his role in conspiring to illegally sell oxycodone, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.
Tamer Awad, 26, of Clifton, N.J., previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares to an Information charging him with conspiracy to possess and distribute oxycodone, which is a Schedule II controlled substance. Judge Linares imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:
Oxycodone is a highly addictive prescription painkiller that can only be dispensed by a medical professional or pharmacist. From Jan. 4, 2011, through Feb. 8, 2011, Awad conspired with others to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute approximately 560 80-milligram oxycodone pills. On Feb. 8, 2011, Awad and a co-conspirator were arrested near Alps Road and Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne, N.J., when they attempted to sell the oxycodone to an undercover federal law enforcement officer.
In addition to the prison term, Judge Linares sentenced Awad to three years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Ward in Newark, with the investigation leading to today’s sentencing.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shirley U. Emehelu of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark.
