Newark man sentenced to 10 years in prison for carjacking, weapons possession

NEWARK, N.J. – A Newark man was sentenced today to 10 years in prison for his role in a gunpoint carjacking, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Amonra Jackson, 30, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares to two counts of an Indictment charging him with one count of theft of a motor vehicle by force, violence and intimidation and one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Judge Linares imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:

Jackson admitted to stealing a 2007 Acura MDX in Newark on Dec. 17, 2010. During the course of the carjacking, Jackson brandished a firearm and punched the driver in the face. Jackson, a convicted felon, was arrested on Dec. 19, 2010, and was apprehended while in possession of a loaded firearm.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Linares sentenced Jackson to three years of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Ward in Newark, for conducting the investigation. He also thanked the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray, and the Newark Police Department, under the direction of Newark Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew Pak and Barbara Llanes of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark.
