Andrew T. Baxter became the Acting United States Attorney on September 5, 2008, upon the resignation of Hon. Glenn T. Suddaby and his appointment as a United States District Judge. He was appointed Interim United States Attorney, effective April 3, 2009, by Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. Mr. Baxter previously held the positions of Senior Litigation Counsel (1999 - 2002), Chief of the Criminal Division (2002 - 2006), and, most recently, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York. He has served as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Syracuse, New York since 1988, handling primarily “white collar” offenses. Mr. Baxter was recognized by the Department of Justice with Awards for Superior Performance as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in 1993 and 2000. He was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of New Jersey from 1984 through 1988, after engaging in the private practice of law in Philadelphia for three years.
Andrew T. Baxter was born in Syracuse, New York in 1956 and returned to Central New York in 1988. He resides in the Syracuse area with his wife, Margot and their son, Christopher, currently a student at Boston College. Mr. Baxter graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in Economics in 1978 and from Harvard Law School in 1981.
