Project Safe Neighborhoods

Project Safe Neighborhoods is a nationwide Presidential initiative to reduce gun violence. It is widely implemented in this District and promotes the creation of local partnerships to effectively enforce existing gun laws. It also provides more options to prosecutors, allowing them to utilize local, state, and federal laws to ensure that criminals who commit gun crimes face tough sentences. Project Safe Neighborhoods gives each federal district the flexibility it needs to focus on individual challenges that are faced by a specific community. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales recently announced that Cleveland is one of only six cities in the nation to receive $2.5 million in grants to implement a comprehensive anti-gang strategy. The money is divided into categories: $1 million for enforcement; $1 million for prevention; and $500,000 for prisoner re-entry. Through the dedicated efforts of the 2006 Project Safe Neighborhoods Grant Selection Committee, over $303,000 has been recently awarded to deserving area grant recipients in this District.
