Work to foster a safe and open relationship with your children as it related to the Internet. Make surfing the ‘Net a family experience. Use it pick out a movie, look at family photos or check out other family activities.

Set limits to the amount of time they can spend on the computer.

Talk with older children, particularly those with cell phones and e-mail accounts, about cyberbullying, both about why it is bad to do, and what they should do if someone is cyberbullying them (approach you, a teacher or another trusted adult.)

Remind them that they should never send personal information to anyone they “meet” online. If anything they see or are told online makes them uncomfortable, encourage them to tell you, a teacher or another trusted adult.
