Steven M. Dettelbach was publically sworn in today as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. Mr. Dettelbach stated, “I am honored to be leading the dedicated and talented career staff at the United States Attorney’s Office. Their promise, and my promise, to you is to serve this district with excellence and integrity.”

The event took place in the auditorium of the Martin Luther King High School for Law and Municipal Careers in Cleveland. Attendees were welcomed by the Honorable Benita Y. Pearson, United States Magistrate Judge, and the National Anthem was sung by the Martin Luther King High School Ensemble. The Honorable Sherrod Brown, United States Senator, administered the Oath of Office. A talk entitled “What the Law Means to Me” was presented by Dontea Gresham, a student at Martin Luther King High School. During his remarks, Mr. Dettelbach announced that an internship program is being created for a student from Martin Luther King High School to work in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio.

Featured speakers included Thomas E. Perez, the Assistant Attorney General for the
Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, and Craig S. Morford, the former Acting Deputy Attorney General of the United States. During his remarks, Mr. Perez announced that Mr. Dettelbach has been named by Attorney General Eric Holder to be the Chairman of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee Subcommittee on Civil Rights issues. Closing thoughts were provided by the Rev. Otis Moss, Jr.

In addition to numerous public, elected and law enforcement officials, other Federal officials in attendance included David Kris, the Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division of the Department of Justice, and Stewart Carter, the newly-appointed United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.
