Criminal Division
The Assistant United States Attorneys of the Criminal Division
represent the United States in all criminal cases involving violations
of federal criminal laws. The Criminal Division consists of five
units:
1. Violent Crimes Unit - prosecutes violent crimes such as kidnapping,
bank robbery, domestic violence, and murder.
2. Drug Unit - prosecutes individuals involved with smuggling,
manufacturing, or distributing controlled substances.
3. Financial Fraud Unit - concentrates on economic crimes, including
bank fraud, investment fraud, and environmental crimes.
4. Terrorism Unit - investigates and prosecutes individuals
involved in crimes related to terrorism.
5. Victim-Witness Unit - provides services to victims and witnesses
of crimes (see the Victim-Witness
pages of this website for further information).
Civil Division
The Assistant United States Attorneys of the Civil Division
represent the United States in all civil actions brought to federal
or state court in Oregon in which the federal government is a
party. It consists of two units:
1. Defensive Litigation Unit - defends employment disputes,
medical malpractice, auto accidents, and other tort actions against
the United States.
2. Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) Unit - initiates cases
on behalf of the United States such as False Claims Act cases,
civil environmental actions, and healthcare fraud cases (HCF);
initiates court action to recover money due the United States,
including asset forfeiture; and oversees the Financial Litigation
Unit (FLU), which collects all debts owing to the United States,
such as fines, restitution, and student loans.
