United States Attorney's Office News Release

 

April 4, 2007 - United States Attorney Patrick L. Meehan and Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham today announced the filing of a two-count Indictment* against Jan Torres charging him with possession with intent to distribute of 100 grams or more of heroin, a Schedule 1 controlled substance, and with possession with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin within 1,000 feet of a school zone . According to the indictment, Torres, while within 1,000 feet of a school zone, was in possession of more than 100 grams of heroin that he intended to sell to an undercover Philadelphia Police officer, at 4700 Castor Avenue in Philadelphia on March 14, 2006.

If convicted of both charges, defendant Torres faces a mandatory minimum five (5) years up to 80 years in prison, a mandatory minimum eight years supervised release, plus a $6,000,000 fine and $200 special assessment.

The case was investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office under an initiative in which offenders are identified for prosecution in federal court, where the penalty upon conviction is likely to be significant. The case has been assigned to Special Assistant United States Attorney Joseph Whitehead, Jr.
