February 9, 2007 - Patrick L. Meehan, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, today announced the filing of an indictment* against Julio Hector Santos, charging him with attempted possession of 500 grams or more of cocaine with intent to distribute. The indictment charges that on or about January 8, 2007, in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Julio Hector Santos attempted to possess approximately two kilograms of cocaine with intent to distribute. Santos was arrested by Postal Inspectors on January 8, 2007, and charged with the aforesaid offense in a Complaint and Warrant following the execution of a search warrant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a residence to which a package containing a picture frame in which two kilograms of cocaine had been concealed was addressed and was sent by express mail from Puerto Rico.

If convicted of the offense charged, the defendant faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, a mandatory minimum term of 10 years imprisonment, at least 8 years supervised release, a fine of $4,000,000 and a special assessment of $100. The indictment also seeks criminal forfeiture of the drug proceeds and property derived from or which facilitated the commission of the charged drug trafficking crime.

This case was the result of an investigation by the United States Postal Inspectors, Philadelphia Division.
