philadelphia couple Charged With defrauding the government

Michael Acciavatti 59, and Maryann Acciavatti, 56, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were charged today by indictment with multiple counts of wire fraud, social security fraud, and conversion of Government funds, announced United States Attorney Zane D. Memeger. The indictment alleges that for 19 years, from June 1991 until November 10, 2010, Michael and Maryann Acciavatti diverted the survivor’s insurance benefits that were intended for a deceased family member. The Acciavattis took the funds for their own use, resulting in total losses to the government of approximately $152,045.

If convicted, the defendants each face a maximum possible sentence of more than 100 years incarceration, a fine of up to $10.25 million, and three years supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General and is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Thomas Moshang III.
