April 9, 2007 - United States Attorney Patrick L. Meehan today announced the filing today of an Indictment* against defendant MICHAEL BANKOFF, charging him with three counts of threatening to assault a federal official, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 115(a)(1)(B). The Indictment charges that, on or about February 26, 2007, and on or about March 9, 2007, in Philadelphia, defendant MICHAEL BANKOFF threatened a total of three different employees of the Social Security Administration, with the intent to impede, intimidate, and interfere with those officials while engaged in the performance of their official duties, and with the intent to retaliate against those officials on account of the performance of their official duties.

If convicted the defendant faces a combined maximum possible sentence of 18 years imprisonment, a 3-year period of supervised release, a $750,000 fine, and a special assessment of $300.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Protective Service, and has been assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Peter D. Hardy.
