United States Attorney's Office News Release

 

March 15, 2007 - United States Attorney Patrick L. Meehan and Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham today announced the filing of an Indictment* against Omar Braswell and Troy Ponton charging them with conspiracy to distribute cocaine base (“crack”) and with distribution of cocaine base (“crack”). According to the indictment, the men engaged with one another to deliver to undercover officers “crack” cocaine in excess of 120 grams at 5100 North 9th Street in Philadelphia on October 25, 2006.

If convicted of all charges, defendant Braswell faces a mandatory ten (10) years up to life in prison, plus a $4,000,000 fine and $100 special assessment.

If convicted of all charges, defendant Ponton faces a mandatory ten (10) years up to life in prison, plus a $4,000,000 fine and $100 special assessment. Due to career offender provisions, defendant Ponton faces 17 ½ to 21 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.

The case was investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office under an initiative in which offenders are identified for prosecution in federal court, where the penalty upon conviction is likely to be significant. The case has been assigned to Special Assistant United States Attorney Joseph Whitehead, Jr.
