HEALTH SYSTEM SETTLES WITH GOVERNMENT
FOR OVERCHARGING MEDICARE PATIENTS
March 5, 2007 - PHILADELPHIA – United States Attorney Pat Meehan today announced a settlement with Crozer-Keystone Health System regarding services provided at its Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, PA. The settlement includes the payment of $549,663 to the Medicare program.
From July 1, 1999 to June 30, 2004 Crozer-Keystone, through its subsidiary Health Access Network, employed four physicians who specialized in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. During that period, the four doctors, Dennis Ivill, M.D., Patrick Murphy, D.O., Jyothi Chinta, M.D., and Lynn W. Yang, M.D., overcharged Medicare for outpatient visits, hospital admissions, hospital discharges, and inpatient consultations.
Crozer-Keystone discovered the overcharging and voluntarily disclosed it to the United States. The settlement acknowledged and reflected Crozer-Keystone’s cooperation.
“The government has to ensure the protection of our most vulnerable healthcare consumers and they are the ones who ultimately suffer when the system is overcharged,” said Meehan. “This settlement is an acknowledgment by a provider that mistakes were made that must not be repeated at the expense of senior citizens.
The case was assigned to AUSA Margaret L. Hutchinson. The case was investigated by Special Agent William McDonald of the Department of Health and Human Services and Allison Barnes, Auditor with the U.S Attorney’s Office.
