On April 20, 2009, Wilkes-Barre Area School District Board of Education member Brian Dunn was charged in a one-count criminal complaint with corrupt receipt of a reward in connection with official action, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, section 666.
The complaint alleges that between on or about January 1, 2005 and on or about December 31, 2008, Mr. Dunn, in his capacity as a member of the Board of Education for the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, corruptly accepted tens of thousands of dollars in cash intending to be influenced and rewarded in connection with the hiring of teachers and in connection with the awarding of contracts by the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, involving a thing of value of more than $5,000. The information further alleges that, within a one year period from the date of the commission of the offense, the Wilkes-Barre Area School District received benefits in excess of $10,000 under a federal program involving a grant, contract, subsidy, loan, guarantee, insurance and other form of federal assistance.
